James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling: The Tampa Owner’s Guide

A full James Hardie bathroom remodel in Tampa typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed, depending on the square footage, substrate condition, and whether you’re replacing the tub surround, shower walls, or entire wet-area envelope. We stock and install James Hardie backer board and HardieBacker-compatible bathroom systems, and in most cases we can start rough-in within a week of your written estimate. What usually brings homeowners to call us is simple: tile popping off the wall, grout cracking in a straight vertical line, or soft, swollen drywall where the shower meets the floor. Those symptoms point to a substrate failure, not a tile problem, and the fix is almost always James Hardie backer board installed the right way with the right fasteners, tape, and waterproofing layer.

Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

A remodeled hall bathroom with subway tile and a floating vanity

When Tampa homeowners say they have “James Hardie in the bathroom,” they usually mean one of two things: HardieBacker cement board (the 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch panels used as tile substrate in showers, tub surrounds, and floor underlayment) or HardiePlank/HardiePanel used on exterior walls behind a bathroom addition. For interior wet areas, the product is HardieBacker 500 (1/2-inch) for walls and HardieBacker 250 (1/4-inch) for floors and countertops. The compatibility gotcha that catches people off guard: HardieBacker is not a waterproofing system by itself. It’s dimensionally stable and moisture-resistant, but Tampa’s humidity means seam tape and a roll-on membrane (like RedGard or Hydro Ban) still need to go over the board before tile. If a previous contractor skipped that step, you’ll see tile failure within two to three years, usually starting at the lower corners of the shower. We install James Hardie per manufacturer spec, which includes the required alkaline-resistant mesh tape on every seam and the proper fastener schedule, every time.

Bradford Remodeling Co Tampa is an independent service provider and not affiliated with James Hardie. We buy the product from authorized suppliers so the batch numbers are traceable, and we back the installation with our own written guarantee.

Signs Your James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Vertical crack lines in the grout at consistent intervals. This usually means the backer board seams were not taped or the board was installed with drywall screws instead of the specified backer screws. Movement at the seam transfers straight through to the tile.
  • Soft spots or spongy drywall under the tile near the tub lip or shower pan. Water is wicking behind the board and rotting the framing or the drywall behind it. By the time you feel it, the damage is usually larger than the visible area.
  • Mold or mineral staining bleeding through grout lines even after cleaning. The substrate is saturated. In Tampa’s humidity, that doesn’t dry out on its own, and bleach doesn’t fix what’s behind the tile.
  • Tile that sounds hollow when tapped. The thinset bond has failed between the tile and the board. This is a sign of improper thinset coverage or tile installed over a wet, degraded substrate.
  • Floors that flex or squeak under tile. HardieBacker on a floor needs a properly spaced subfloor beneath it. If the original subfloor was compromised, the board and tile move as one unit, and grout cracks follow.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A freestanding soaking tub in a remodeled primary bathroom

In Tampa, a James Hardie bathroom remodel with full wet-area replacement runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed. The spread comes down to a few things: the size of the shower or tub surround, whether we’re replacing the tub/shower pan itself, the condition of the framing once we open the wall, and the finish level of the tile and fixtures you choose. A smaller guest bath with a tub surround stays near the bottom of that range. A master bath with a walk-in shower, floor replacement, and custom niche work climbs toward the top.

What’s included in our price: full demo of the failed area, framing inspection and repair where needed, new James Hardie backer board, seam tape and waterproofing membrane, tile and grout installation, fixture remodeling, and haul-away of debris. Every price is written before work starts, and the number on your contract is the number you pay. No change orders at the door. And the work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within the first year, we return and correct it at no charge, in writing.

DIY or Call Us?

The safe part of DIY is the inspection: you can look for hollow tile, check grout for vertical cracks, and feel for soft spots near the tub lip. That tells you something’s wrong, but it doesn’t tell you the scope. The dangerous part of DIY is opening the wall in a Tampa bathroom. You’re cutting into areas with plumbing supply lines, drain stacks, and in some older Seminole Heights bungalows, wiring that was never brought up to code. What usually goes wrong first: an owner installs new backer board but skips the waterproofing membrane because the YouTube video didn’t mention it, or uses the wrong seam tape, or sets the board tight against the tub lip instead of leaving the required gap for silicone. The failure shows up a year later and costs more to fix than the original job. If you want to know what’s behind your tile before you decide, call (941) 655-9297 and we’ll give you a straight answer and a written price.
